Addition Strategies

We are brushing up on our addition strategies. Earlier in the year, our focus was on the meaning of addition and the parts of an addition sentence. Now that we are towards the end of the year our focus shifts to harder complex problems, as well as automaticity with simple addition facts. Here are a few strategies we are using this week.

It's no trouble for me to add doubles!

We are learning addition strategies this week. We are learning our doubles facts to help solve other addition problems, as well as how to make ten to solve a problem. Another strategy we started last week was Touch Math. This is a great way to add kinesthetically. Ask your child to show you the touch points for the number 1-9.

Here are two songs we are using this week. Be forewarned.... they WILL stick in your head!

Also, here is a game we are playing in math centers this week. Feel free to print it out and play it at home. All you need is a dice and a few markers.

Two ways you can help our school...

We have 2 fundraisers going on right now that are both super easy ways to the raise money for Glenwood.

The first is the eRecycling drive:

This is a great opportunity to turn in those old cell phones you have laying around, empty printer cartridges, old digital cameras, or any other old electronics laying around the house.

The second fundraiser is Change for the Playground:

Any spare change you find around the house, send our way! The PTA is fundraising to build a new playground. We hope to raise $30,000 over the next 10 months.

Thank you always for the continued support!

Science with Ms. Massengale

Our Science unit this quarter is about properties. The students learn to sort items in different ways and also explore how solids and liquids change properties. Ms. Massengale came today to teach us about birds and their properties. We learned some different types and features of birds we can see in our backyard. We listened to their calls and even colored some pictures. You can find all the fun facts at this website.
After all that we went outside to see if we could spot any birds. It was a great lesson and a lot of fun!

Happy Valentine's Day

We had a very busy day. This morning we had Jump Rope for Heart. The kids spent 45 minutes running and jumping. They had a blast! This afternoon we watched a Charlie Brown Valentine while students passed out their cards and candy. To end the day we played some Minute to Win it Games. It was a great day filled with lots of laughter and love.

TIME for Math

This week in math we are learning to tell time. Our first grade standard requires students to be able to tell time to the hour and half hour. Today we had a fun activity to practice what we have learned. We turned paper plates into clocks and used pretzels for the hands!

The students took their plates home and were challenged to find other items around the house to use as hands on the clock.

As always we have some fun songs to help reinforce our time concepts.

100 Reasons to Love 1st Grade!

Our 100th day of school was a success! We had many 100 themed activities and celebrated in style by dressing up like we were 100 years old. The students had some great costumes and many even acted the part!

We made a wordle titled: We are 100 days smarter because...
